Tax Rate Mapping for Magento 2
The Tax Rate Mapping page lets you connect Magento tax rules to SnelStart tax types. This ensures invoices are booked with the correct VAT rates and to the appropriate ledger accounts in your accounting system.
Tip: Not sure which tax type to map? See Setup Helper: Configure Magento Using SnelStart Data to learn how to create a test invoice in SnelStart and see exactly which tax types and ledgers are used.

Columns
| Column | Description |
|---|---|
| ID | Magento tax calculation rule ID |
| Name | Tax rule name as defined in Magento |
| Customer Tax Class | Customer tax class the rule applies to |
| Product Tax Class | Product tax class the rule applies to |
How It Works
- Magento Tax Rules: You define tax rules in Stores → Tax Rules
- Tax Rate Mapping: Here you map each rule to a SnelStart tax type
- Ledger Selection: The tax type determines which ledger account is used
- Invoice Sync: When invoices sync, the correct VAT rate and ledger are applied

SnelStart Tax Types
SnelStart organizes tax by category, which determines the ledger account used:

|---|---|---|
| Hoog | 21% | High VAT rate (standard Dutch VAT) |
| Laag | 9% | Low VAT rate (reduced rate) |
| Overig | Various | Other VAT rates |
| Nultarief | 0% | Zero-rated sales |
| Buiten EU | 0% | Sales outside the EU |
| Binnen EU | 0% | Intra-community sales (ICP) |

Setting Up Tax Mappings
-
Review your Magento tax rules:
- Go to Stores → Tax Rules
- Note which rules you use
-
Open Tax Rate Mapping:
- Go to Accounting → Configuration → Tax Rate Mapping
-
Map each rule:
- Click on the row to edit
- Select the corresponding SnelStart tax type
-
Test with an invoice:
- Sync a test invoice
- Verify in SnelStart the correct ledger and tax rate were applied
Connection to Ledger Accounts
Tax type mapping works together with ledger configuration:
- Tax type selected here → Determines VAT category
- Ledger configuration → You configure which ledger account is used for each tax type
Example:
- Invoice line with 21% VAT → Mapped to "Hoog" → Uses "Product Hoog" ledger
See Configuration Guide for ledger account setup.
Troubleshooting
Invoice shows wrong tax in SnelStart
- Check the tax rule applied to the invoice items
- Verify the mapping for that rule
- Update the mapping if incorrect
- Resync the invoice
Tax type not available
Ensure you have:
- Active connection to SnelStart
- Synced ledger accounts from SnelStart
- Configured ledger accounts for all tax types
Multiple tax rates on one invoice
The module handles mixed tax rate invoices - each line item uses its own tax mapping.
"Tax rate not found" error
- Go to Tax Rate Mapping
- Find the unmapped tax rule
- Assign a SnelStart tax type
- Retry the invoice sync
Fallback Tax Classes
If a tax rule isn't mapped, the system uses fallback tax classes:
- With Tax → Fallback for orders with tax
- No Tax → Fallback for orders without tax
- EU No Tax → Fallback for intra-EU VAT exempt
- No EU No Tax → Fallback for non-EU orders
Configure these in: Configuration → SnelStart → Advanced Settings
