Configuration Reference for Sitemap Extension

Complete settings reference for the XML Sitemap functionality in the Google Sitemap & Robots extension. This guide covers all sitemap generation settings, priorities, and automation options.

Overview

Navigate to Magmodules → Sitemap to access sitemap settings.

The sitemap module generates XML sitemaps that help search engines discover and index your pages. You can control which pages are included, their priority, and how often the sitemap is regenerated.

General

Setting Description
Enabled Enable or disable the sitemap module

Sitemap Options

Category Settings

Setting Description
Category Update Frequency How often category pages change (always, hourly, daily, weekly, monthly, yearly, never)
Category Priority Priority value 0.0 to 1.0 indicating importance of category pages
Exclude No-Index Categories Skip categories marked with noindex meta tag

Recommended values:

  • Update Frequency: weekly (categories don't change daily)
  • Priority: 0.7 (important but less than homepage)

Product Settings

Setting Description
Product Update Frequency How often product pages change
Product Priority Priority value 0.0 to 1.0 for product pages
Include Product Images Add product images to sitemap (None, Base Only, All)
Exclude No-Index Products Skip products marked with noindex meta tag

Recommended values:

  • Update Frequency: daily (prices/stock may change)
  • Priority: 0.8 (products are key pages)
  • Include Product Images: Base Only (helps image search)

CMS Page Settings

Setting Description
CMS Page Update Frequency How often CMS pages change
CMS Page Priority Priority value 0.0 to 1.0 for CMS pages
Exclude No-Index CMS Pages Skip CMS pages marked with noindex meta tag

Recommended values:

  • Update Frequency: monthly (static content)
  • Priority: 0.5 (supporting content)

Homepage URL Settings

Setting Description
Homepage Update Frequency How often homepage changes
Homepage Priority Priority value 0.0 to 1.0 for homepage

Recommended values:

  • Update Frequency: daily
  • Priority: 1.0 (most important page)

Feed Generation Settings

Setting Description
Enable Enable feed generation for this store view
Filename Custom filename for the sitemap (e.g., sitemap.xml)
Cron Enable Enable automatic sitemap generation via cron
Cron Frequency How often to regenerate the sitemap

Tip: Enable cron generation and set frequency to daily. This ensures your sitemap stays current without manual intervention.

Sitemap File Limits

Setting Description
Maximum No of URLs Per File Maximum URLs per sitemap file
Maximum File Size Maximum file size in bytes

Recommended values:

  • Max URLs: 50000 (Google's limit)
  • Max File Size: 10485760 (10MB, Google's limit)

When limits are exceeded, the module automatically creates a sitemap index file that references multiple sitemap files. This is handled transparently.

Debug

Setting Description
Debug Mode Enable detailed logging for troubleshooting

Enable only when investigating issues. Check var/log/ for debug output.

Feeds Grid

Displays generated sitemap URLs and generation timestamps.

Actions:

  • Generate - Manually regenerate the sitemap
  • View - Open the sitemap URL in browser

Priority and Frequency Reference

Update Frequency Values

Value Use For
always Pages that change every time they're accessed
hourly News feeds, frequently updated content
daily Product pages with dynamic pricing/stock
weekly Category pages, blog posts
monthly CMS pages, static content
yearly Archive pages
never Archived content that won't change

Note: These are hints to search engines, not commands. Google may crawl more or less frequently based on its own analysis.

Priority Values

Range Use For
1.0 Homepage
0.8 - 0.9 Important categories, featured products
0.5 - 0.7 Standard product and category pages
0.3 - 0.5 CMS pages, less important content
0.1 - 0.2 Archive pages, terms & conditions

Note: Priority is relative within your site only. Setting everything to 1.0 is the same as setting everything to 0.5.

Submitting to Search Engines

After generating your sitemap:

Google Search Console

  1. Log into Google Search Console
  2. Select your property
  3. Go to Sitemaps in the left menu
  4. Enter your sitemap URL (e.g., https://yourstore.com/sitemap.xml)
  5. Click Submit

Bing Webmaster Tools

  1. Log into Bing Webmaster Tools
  2. Select your site
  3. Go to Sitemaps
  4. Add your sitemap URL
